Cycling in (the surroundings of) Rome with children
Are you looking for a great way to explore Rome with the whole family? Look no further, because cycling in Rome with Baja Bikes is the solution. I have had this experience myself with my teenager and would like to share our experience with you. As a Dutch person, cycling in Rome with your children should definitely be on your list. We did the highlights bike tour in Rome and saw a lot in a short time. Rome is busy, very different from cycling in Paris.
Cycling in Rome with children, discover the highlights
At Baja Bikes you always have a bike tour with a Dutch guide and that is of course a big advantage if you are cycling through Rome with children. You are guaranteed to hear everything in your own language when you cycle past highlights such as the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, across the Piazza Navona and Campo de' Fiori. All information is clear, no translation is required and maximum questions can be asked. For older children it is not really tiring to cycle in Rome yourself and you can really see a lot of the city in the 3 hours, which I estimate covers about 8 to 10 kilometers. We get off a number of times along the way to continue on foot because of crowds, for example at the Spanish Steps and at the Panthéon. A time is agreed upon when everyone will be back and that works perfectly.
Equally practical, this is what you can expect from Baja Bikes
If you book with Baja Bikes Rome you can at least expect the following:
- Free child seats and helmets available.
- Departure location near the Roman Forum, very central.
- Toilet available before departure.
- Many stops at child-friendly attractions
Our guide knows a lot about the history of Rome and also tells interesting facts that are interesting for children. She made the tour educational and fun, with many stops at child-friendly attractions such as the Colosseum and a pit stop at Venchi Cioccolato e Gelato! Because of the variety, sometimes stopping somewhere and going to a highlight on your own for fifteen minutes, there is a lot of variety in this bike tour through Rome and I really like that with children.
Cycling in Rome with children, safe or not?
I can answer this question clearly right away: safe! Of course, the route you cycle is one that the guide takes every day and they therefore know exactly where you have to be careful when crossing the road, where you can take a shortcut and what's more, you go through Rome in one loop with cyclists and that goes just fine. A child with some cycling experience is useful. Children under the age of 8 ride safely on the back of the bike in Rome. I don't think it is feasible for them to cycle themselves, you just have to be alert.
We drive to many places where there are no cars, take back streets and stop from time to time to get an explanation. We often get off and take pictures. You can rent a bike at Bakabikes and even discover Rome with your children. My advice is not to do that, you simply don't know your way there and in my opinion you will miss the really nice places and views with explanations. Would you rather discover it all yourself? Then make sure you have a route in advance that you can easily follow.
The highlight of this bike tour? More than one, that's for sure! We had a beautiful viewpoint in front of the Colosseum, laughed at the nicknames of the Monument of Victor Emanuel II (the first king of Italy) and received tips from a local that made us happy and which I won't tell you here. So be sure to hop on your bike and explore Rome with your family, you won't regret it! And would you rather travel in Rome with an e-bike? Which can. But to be honest, the cycling pace is really not too high, so in my opinion it is not really necessary to rent an e-bike.
For families with smaller children, free child seats are available from Baja Bikes..
Cycling along Via Appia or that family tour?
There are about 10 different bike tours from Baja Bikes in Rome and they even offer walking tours in Rome so you can discover the eternal city in all kinds of ways with your children! Most bicycle tours from Baja Bikes Rome are for all target groups and if you want to do something different than the highlights, then cycling along the Via Appia with its original road surface that is more than 2,400 years old is of course really cool! Especially if, like me, you have a teenager with you who is extremely interested in Roman history. It is on our list for a next visit to Rome, because it is certain that this city trip will continue.
The group we cycle in is manageable and I can easily join in with my 11-year-old teenager, who can cycle well and responsibly. If you really have small children, it is smart to choose the bike tour especially for children. Why? The pace is a bit slower and in this tour Bakabikes tries to bring as many families together as possible. This way the guide can really adapt the story to children. It is not without reason that this bike tour has been declared the most child-friendly excursion in Rome by the ANWB, of course!
