Top things to do in Bled with kids (and surroundings)
Lake Bled is a gem in the heart of Slovenia, surrounded by majestic mountains and blessed with a fairy-tale island in the middle. But what makes Bled worth visiting? We spent a day at Lake Bled with our kids to find out. Unfortunately, we hit a rainy day, but that didn't dampen our spirits! I'll take you on a journey to Bled, which is conveniently located near our stops in Kranjska Gora and Tržič.
Lake Bled, a bit of history
Lake Bled is an enchanting destination deeply nestled in the heart of Slovenia. This stunning lake came into existence about 14,000 years ago during the last Ice Age. A massive glacier covered the area and carved out the basin that would later become Lake Bled. After the glacier melted, a magical lake remained, framed by the majestic Julian Alps and the Karawanken mountain range.
But the lake is more than just a natural wonder; it's a place steeped in history, legends, and spiritual significance. Before the Romans arrived, the area was originally inhabited by the ancient Illyrians. In the Middle Ages, the landscape was dominated by Bled Castle, which has played various roles since the 11th century, from a defensive fort to a mansion and even a prison. One of the most iconic features of Lake Bled is the little island in the middle, known as Blejski Otok. This island is home to the impressive Church of the Assumption, built in the 9th century. An age-old tradition on the island is ringing the church bells and making a wish while you ring the 'wishing bell' inside the church.
Bled from Kranjska Gora
We start our visit at the Infocenter Triglavska Roža Bled. It's a good place to gather information about Bled and its surroundings. The center also offers an interactive exhibition on the local flora and fauna, which we find enriching. It's also a great starting point for a hike and other outdoor activities in Triglav National Park. It's very simple: Lake Bled is a must-visit for anyone traveling to Slovenia. It's not just the natural beauty that captivates you, but also the rich tapestry of history and legends that make it a truly unique destination. Whether you're ringing the wishing bell on Bled Island or exploring the ancient Bled Castle, you're participating in a story that has been unfolding for thousands of years.
Bled Castle (Blejski Grad)
If you're traveling to Bled with your family, a visit to the iconic Bled Castle is almost mandatory. Not only is it a historical monument, but it's also a place where your kids can live out their knight and princess fantasies. Perched on a cliff, the castle offers panoramic views of the entire lake and surrounding areas. As the oldest castle in Slovenia, dating back to 1011, it houses various museums and exhibitions that bring the region's history to life.
Now, let's get practical. My top tip is to visit the castle on a sunny and clear day to fully enjoy the view. The castle sits high above the picturesque Lake Bled, and you can get there either on foot or by car. The parking lot is small and paid, so plan accordingly. If you're visiting during the busy summer months, consider walking to the castle and braving the stairs for a more hassle-free experience. Whether you're looking to delve into history or give your children a fairytale experience, Bled Castle offers a perfect blend of both. Trust me, the climb—whether by car or foot—is worth it for the views alone!
Visiting Bled Castle with Kids
Visiting Bled in May, we were greeted with relentless rain. Undeterred, we decided to drive to Bled Castle. The parking lot was packed with tour buses, and the castle itself was swarming with people. We opted for a quick tour and headed straight to the printing press located on the left side of the castle entrance. It's a fascinating look at how books were printed in the past. The man running the press provides detailed explanations, offering a unique insight into the ancient art of printing and bookbinding. It's engaging for visitors of all ages, in my opinion.
Soaked to the bone despite our umbrellas, we decided it was time to head to the boat for a trip to Bled Island. The castle was incredibly crowded, and our toddler was literally lost in a sea of legs. Given the weather and the crowds, we didn't find the castle to be a great experience on this particular day. If you're dealing with bad weather and crowds, Bled Castle might not be the best choice. It becomes very touristy, and people shuffle through the castle in lines, which can be overwhelming, especially for little ones.
Sailing with the Pletna Boat
Pletna boats are traditional Slovenian rowboats that have been used on Lake Bled for centuries. These boats have a rich history and are an integral part of the charm and culture of the area surrounding the lake. The history of pletna boats dates back to the 12th century, and some sources even suggest they were used as early as the 9th century. Originally designed for water transport, especially to reach the iconic Bled Island in the middle of the lake, these boats have a unique rowing technique. The "pletner," or rower, stands upright and uses two oars, operated with both hands. This ensures a stable and efficient rowing experience.
Our goal is to visit Bled Island and marvel at the Church of the Assumption, a pilgrimage site and a historical gem. And yes, we're excited to ring the "wishing bell" at this sacred location! While we're tempted by the romance of a pletna boat ride, we opt for a different boat that will get us there faster. Why? Well, the day is one big rain shower, and the design of the pletna boat guarantees we won't stay dry. So much for romance! It's no wonder we see hardly any boats on the water. We decide to cozy up inside an electric boat instead.
If you're visiting on a rainy day, the open design of the pletna boats might not be the best choice for staying dry. Electric boats offer a more weather-proof option, so you can still enjoy the island without getting soaked. So, while the pletna boats offer a traditional and romantic experience, sometimes practicality takes precedence. And that's perfectly okay!
Visiting Bled Island
When our boat docks at Bled Island, we're told we have just 45 minutes to explore, as this is the last boat of the day. Time is of the essence, so we make our way uphill to a quaint square where a café beckons. But first, we head to the Church of the Assumption. This isn't just an architectural gem; it's a sanctuary of peace and spirituality, adorned with Gothic architecture and a few Baroque elements added later. The current church dates back to the 17th century, but a place of worship has existed here much longer. The frescoes and wood carvings tell a rich story of religious art and tradition.
To reach the church, you'll need to climb a staircase of 99 steps from the pletna boat landing. According to local tradition, grooms carry their brides up these 99 steps as a symbol of their love and commitment. After our church visit, we also climb the adjacent tower. I can guarantee that the view on a clear day is absolutely stunning!
Due to the high number of tourists in Bled, a new ferry service is being introduced to ensure that visitors can get to the island during the summer months.
Swimming at Rikli Balance Hotel
From the moment we park our car and check into the Rikli Balance Hotel, we know we're in for a delightful and comfortable stay. The weather isn't on our side, but that doesn't stop us from enjoying the hotel's amenities. Even if you're not a guest, you can purchase a ticket to access the largest swimming paradise in the Bled area. Formerly known as Hotel Golf, this resort has undergone a transformation that you absolutely must experience. Despite the rainy day in Bled, the indoor swimming paradise instantly brings sunshine into our lives, making up for a day of rain as we explored Bled's highlights. And let's not forget the breathtaking view of the serene Lake Bled from the pool—perhaps even more special than the view from the shore.
At Rikli Balance, you'll find the largest pools in the area, all with a view of Lake Bled. The pool complex offers four indoor thermal pools. If you're looking for a bit more action, there's an indoor slide that's a hit with our kids. For the little ones, there's a special indoor thermal children's pool, ensuring they too can enjoy a warm bath. And when you're ready for some extra relaxation, the massage pool is the place to be.

Sauna with a view of Bled Castle, a family retreat
The moment we step into the sauna complex, wegreeted by an array of options designed to rejuvenate both body and soul. There's a thermal pool and a Finnish sauna with a stunning view—perfect for unwinding. If you're looking to sweat it out, there are three Turkish saunas to open up those pores. For those who love the heat, there's a hot Finnish sauna and a Finnish bio-sauna. And if you need a quick cooldown, two cold pools await your refreshing dive.
If you're looking to add a unique experience to your Slovenian family road trip, this hotel is a must-visit. It's perfect for a one or two-night stay, depending on your budget. After a day of exploring, it's blissful to relax in the swimming paradise that stays open late. And for parents? A dip in the sauna with a breathtaking view of Lake Bled and Bled Castle is the cherry on top, in our opinion. The sauna complex is open late, so it's perfect for evening relaxation.
The dinner buffet at Restaurant Veranda is a culinary surprise. Freshly prepared, honest food and a wide range of choices—it's a feast for kids. Our children loved the buffet and even tried dishes they wouldn't normally order. We opted for two connecting rooms, which are ideal for our family of four. The kids have their own space and can easily walk over to our suite, which boasts a beautiful lake view. The breakfast the next morning is just as impressive as the dinner, offering a wide range of fresh and healthy options. We absolutely love that!
So, whether it's the sauna complex, the culinary offerings, or the comfortable accommodations, the Rikli Balance Hotel offers something for every member of the family. It's a place where comfort meets adventure, and we couldn't recommend it more!

If you find yourself in the region near Bled, you absolutely must not miss the medieval town of Radovljica, especially the shop where the most delicious chocolate is sold: Radolca Chocolate, or Radolška Ĉokolada in Slovenian. Nestled in the quaint town of Radovljica, this chocolate haven is just a stone's throw away from Bled and our cozy cabin at Glamping Mountain Fairy Tale. The owners, Natasja and Greg, have a palpable passion for chocolate, striving for perfection and attention to detail in every creation. The shop is situated in a picturesque medieval town, adding to the overall experience. What makes Radolca Chocolate truly special is its story. Despite being a family business, Radolška Ĉokolada is relatively new. Yet, the passion that Natasja and Greg have for chocolate is evident. This passion manifests itself in the form of small, intricate pieces of chocolate art that simply melt in your mouth!
We decided to take a chocolate workshop at Radolška Ĉokolada, and let me tell you, it's an absolute delight for families with children. The workshop is intimate and cozy, with special attention given to the kids. We even got to take home our own handmade chocolate creations, which we savored throughout our vacation. Pure bliss! If you're traveling with your family, a visit to Radolca Chocolate is not just a treat for your taste buds but also an enriching experience that combines history, art, and the joy of making something with your own hands. Don't miss it!

Vintgar Gorge & Dovžan Gorge
If you're planning a family trip to Slovenia, two natural wonders you won't want to miss are Vintgar Gorge and Dovžan Gorge. Both are easily accessible by car and offer unique experiences that are perfect for families. Vintgar Gorge is renowned for its wooden walkways that guide you along the Radovna River, leading you to the stunning Šum waterfall. This is an accessible hike, making it ideal for families with young children. Just make sure to wear comfortable shoes and pack some snacks, as there are no shops along the way. The gorge is a visual feast, with the wooden paths offering a unique way to experience the natural beauty of the area.
On the other hand, Dovžan Gorge is a geological marvel. As you wander through, you'll find informative signs detailing the rock formations, making it a fascinating educational experience, especially for older kids. The gorge offers various hiking routes suitable for families, and of course, there are picnic spots along the way—something you'll find almost everywhere in Slovenia.
Both gorges are open from April to October, so you can plan your visit during those months. If you have to choose between the two, Vintgar might be more suitable for young families due to its accessibility, while Dovžan would be more appealing to those interested in geology. Both Vintgar and Dovžan Gorges offer something special for families. Vintgar provides a fairy-tale-like experience with its wooden paths and waterfalls, while Dovžan offers a more educational journey through Slovenia's geological history.
